The conditions required to sit for any of these local licences are as follows:
Examinations for the issue of Authorisation Licences A and B for Carrying out Installation, Alteration, Extension and Certification of Electrical Installations according to S.L. 545.24 are held twice a year during the months of January/February and July. There are two Authorisation types:
Candidates sitting for Authorisation A or Authorisation B are required to sit for two written examination papers. Candidates who pass both written papers of the same examination session will be eligible for the Practical Test and Interview. Candidates must obtain a pass in the Practical Test and Interview to be able to apply with REWS for an Authorisation A or for an Authorisation B.
Candidates who qualify in the written papers but fail in the Practical Test and Interview need not resit for the written papers as long as the Practical Test and Interview are taken within a period not exceeding two (2) years from the Written Test.
The issuing of such licences will be done by REWS subject to the candidates satisfying all requirements. For more information, please consult the REWS website.
The notice announcing the above examination is published in the Government Gazette around the months of April (for the July session) and November (for the January/February session).
Notice regarding the Practical Test and Interview for the New Syllabus Examinations
A candidate who has attained a pass in both Paper I and Paper II of the respective Licence is required to sit for the Practical and Interview Test. The Practical Test carries a total weight of 70% while the Interview has a total weight of 30%. The examination will be one-hour long, inclusive of 15 minutes preparation time and 45 mins for the Practical Test and the Interview. Candidates will need to obtain a global mark of at least 50% to pass.
The practical part of this Test will be based on the syllabus. The test will consist of a hands-on practical session applying the concepts of the Electrical Installations Regulations through the use of different equipment/instruments.
Further details:
Candidates are required to have proper training, experience, and knowledge of safety protocols to minimize the risk of injury or damage. It is important to stress the practical application of knowledge in safe work practices and adherence to IET regulations throughout the examination process. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in safe electrical installation practices, identification and use of electrical tools, equipment and materials, and the ability to diagnose and repair faults.
Candidates undertaking such an examination need to have the necessary technical knowledge and relevant practical skills to conduct electrical installation work safely in alignment with national safety standards, regulations and code of practice. The Practical Test will gauge the candidates’ competence to work effectively and safely in a high-risk environment. The Practical Test puts emphasis on the candidates’ experience and application of theoretical knowledge to authentic real-life situations in adherence with Health and Safety Standards and Regulations relevant to Electrical Installation.
Candidates will be requested to use the electrical installation boards specifically designed for this Practical Test, and other testing equipment to conduct electrical installation work. During the Practical Test, candidates are provided with a write-on script, which is filled in to substantiate the processing of the hands-on task.
Candidates will be provided clear and concise instructions and guidelines before starting the Practical Test. During this practical session, the examiners will ask candidates questions related to the equipment, legislation and regulations based on the IET Wiring Regulations, the practical test assigned and their practical experience. It is important that candidates and their mentors also refer to the Electrical Installations Regulations, Subsidiary Legislation 545.24 while preparing for the Practical Test.
A range of situations and exercises may be presented to test the candidates’ ability to work safely and efficiently under various conditions. This may include working with a single-phase voltage supply in the case of Authorisation Licence A and a three-phase voltage supply in the case of Authorisation Licence B. The candidate must demonstrate awareness of the potential hazards when working with electrical equipment, as well as an understanding of safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents/injuries.
During the practical session the candidate will be asked questions related to the IET Regulations, the electrical installation board being inspected or built, and the correct use of tools and testing equipment.
The following gives a broad idea of the Practical Test for both Authorisation A and Authorisation B:
• wiring a circuit;
• troubleshooting and fault-finding of circuits and electrical equipment;
• electrical installation circuits;
• use of testing instruments such as voltmeter, ammeter, ohmmeter, insulation tester and earth fault loop impedance;
• use of the proper tools.
Success in the practical examination will depend on the candidate’s ability to demonstrate a strong understanding of safety protocols and procedures, as well as a thorough knowledge of electrical installation techniques in domestic and industrial settings, depending on the Authorisation Licence being applied for. In this regard, it is recommended that candidates thoroughly review and familiarise themselves with safety guidelines and procedures for electrical installation work, and that they are adequately prepared. Candidates are also invited to refer to the past papers available on our website.
